Gill - News : ArticleGill Australia supports class events17 January 2010Over the holiday period Gill Australia supported a number of classes around the country by sponsoring their Australian and World Championships.Henley Sailing Club in South Australia hosted four class national titles, Impulse, 125, National E and Paper Tiger in a range of conditions.
33 boats from three states contested the Impulse title. The competitors experienced both light, shifty and strong wind races which provided a fair challenge from all in the talented fleet.
After a hard fought event the championship was won by Roger Kennett from Victoria. Commenting on the event, Phil Wise from the class says, "It was pleasing to see new blood settle quickly into the class. (3 new sailors placed in the top 10) Every boat in the fleet would have at least one result which they would be proud to talk about in the year to come."
From all around the country 23 teams competed in the 125 Australian Championship which commenced in lighter airs. After some very hot Adelaide weather the heavier sailors reveled in some stronger winds. The event was won by Victorian pair, Nick Major and Bianca Scott.
The National E and Paper Tiger classes also held their events at Henley Sailing Club and were also sponsored by Gill Australia. Well done to the club and all involved we hear they put on a fantastic series which we were pleased to be involved with.
The Contender class Australian and World Championships were run by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. Another closely contested title, the worlds was won by Victorian Jono Neate who managed to beat 7 time champion Andrea Bonezzi from Italy. Jono had a strategy for each race, keeping in touch with his risk management and sailed a great series in the 60 boat fleet racing in Waterloo Bay. Commenting on the final race, "I knew I had to stay within two points to be sure of the Championships and I actually did something I thought I'd never been able to do. I sat in dirty air for half a leg to stay close to Andrea figuring I just had to stay in contact, so I could attack later and that worked. I took him downwind."
Gill Australia's Director Paul Schulz comments, "Congratulations to all clubs and classes for putting on successful events over the past month. We are happy to support people enjoying our great sport of sailing and look forward to meeting on the water again soon."
